With some babies it is a piece of cake but for the lot it is mission impossible. I’ve learnt some things through trial and error and here I’m going to share those tips with you. One may work for your baby and one may not so keep experimenting.

Pay close attention to your baby’s sleep pattern. It is good to write it down on a piece of paper. Following basic facts will help you determine how much sleep you baby needs at a particular age level
Newborn, 16 to 20 hours per day
3 weeks, 16 to 18 hours per day
6 weeks, 15 to 16 hours per day
4 months, 9 to 12 hours plus two naps (2 to 3 hours each)
6 months, 11 hours plus two naps (1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours each)
9 months, 11 to 12 hours plus two naps (1 to 2 hours each)
1 year, 10 to 11 hours plus two naps (1 to 2 hours each)
18 months, 13 hours plus one or two naps (1 to 2 hours each)
2 years, 11 to 12 hours plus one nap (2 hours)
3 years, 10 to 11 hours plus one nap (2 hours)
4 to 5 years, 10 to 12 hours. Usually no nap.
- Make sure your baby is not hungry.

- Minimize distractions like TV/Radio, mobile, children’s voices etc.
- Use night light to make baby differentiate day and night.
- Don’t play at night. By doing this you are conveying the message that it is ok to play at this time which can make baby active rather than sleepy.
- Do you sleep with your baby or not? Or does your baby like to sleep while having you around or prefer to sleep alone. Be clear about this.
- Set a routine. Wake him up early in the morning and don’t let him nap for longer periods of time. For this you can sleep your baby in a well-lit room.
- Massage and bathe your baby just before putting him into bed.
