Creative Motherhood

Do you know January is International Creativity Month? I came to know about this through Haley from Hanging Off the Wire.

Randall Munson founded it to, “remind individuals and organizations around the world to capitalize on global creativity”.

So what is creativity? According to Wikipedia, “Creativity refers to the phenomenon whereby a person creates something new (a product, a solution, a work of art etc.) that has some kind of value”.

Linda Naiman says, ‘”I define creativity as the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. Innovation is the production or implementation of an idea. If you have ideas, but don’t act on them, you are imaginative but not creative”.

To celebrate this month you don’t have to be an artist, singer, musician, actor or dancer. You can be creative even if you are a mom. A mother is creative when she makes a picky eater eat, calms a fussy toddler, put a restless baby to sleep, and makes a crying baby smile.

Everyday a mom is put to a new test and she finds a new solution every time she is in a challenging situation.

But there are times when Individual differences can make things more complicated. In this era of abundant information and knowledge where you can get a solution of your problem from internet and  books easily, sometime you find yourself in the dark with nothing to help you. Here your creativity can help you. Here are ways to crank up you creativity.

Change your perspective. Think from your child’s point of view. Try introspection and think of your own feelings when you were a child.

Get Relaxed: Just relax for a few moments and while you are at it, brainstorm ideas. You can think of you own ideas, ask an expert or read a parenting book. Even if it doesn’t help, learn to mold them according to your own needs.

Create a mental Picture: If you got stuck in a parenting situation where you have no clue at all what to do next then think what other people would do to make it better. You can think about anyone for example your mom, your favorite writer or favorite actress.

It may seem a tedious task but it is not. You may get your solution in a minute. It is up to you or the sensitivity of the problem. Sometimes a difficult situation gets the best out of you.

You cannot be creative all the time. But inspiration can come from anywhere and anytime so never panic and be happy.

  1. The more I blog, the more comments I get, the more bloggers I meet, the more awesome blogs I discover!
I’m glad you liked my tips on Simple Solutions for a Simplier Life…I LOVE your thoughts on creativity. Just yesterday I heard a toddler’s frenzied crying as his mother put him in a shopping cart at the store. After several minutes of this, I quickly drew a happy face on a small piece of paper, folded it in half and went over and asked the mom if her little one might like a little “book” to write in while she shopped. She thanked me, gave him the paper and pencil and…ahhhhh…the little boy took the little “book” and began drawing on it with the pencil. He was quiet the entire hour she shopped. :)
Many people think creativity is Picasso or Shakespeare…but as you pointed out, the simple acts we do as mothers are often very creative!

  2. This is such a true post. Creativity gets me through every day with my son.

  3. Getting relaxed is so important – that’s the only way to actually really enjoy those special moments with your kiddos. Once I took some of the pressure off myself to try and create the “perfect” project or situation with my little ones… I found out FUN it really can be! And you’ll be amazed at how much your creativity gets a boost just from hanging out with your kids and watching them…

  4. Motherhood stage is fun and at the same time it is hard. But still you enjoy all of the time.
