My toddler wants to accompany me everywhere whether I go to washroom or busy in kitchen. She also wants to work at my laptop while I am typing a new article for the blog. For past six months I had been trying to get my toddler watch television so that I could finish my daily tasks. Though I could not succeeded in my efforts and I am relieved she did not get used to it.
According to a study called, National Longitudinal Survey, watching TV is harmful for children under the age of Two.
The study says, ten percent of children who watched TV for 2.2 hours by average per day at the age of one and 3.6 hours per week at age three have attention problem at age seven.
Some characteristics indicative of hyperactivity, are:
- trouble concentrating
- obsessing regularly
- easily confused
- restlessness
- impulsiveness
The study also suggests the guidelines as to which type of programs are suitable.
So I thought to explore new ways to engage my child into healthy activities instead of watching television while I am busy doing my chores.
To my surprise there are many alternatives that I had never thought of before. Lets have a look at them:
Paper and Pencil:
Let your child be creative. They love to draw whatever they could so hand them paper and pencil or crayons.
Building Blocks: Even if they don’t know how to arrange blocks, they love to play with them
Picture books: Story books or picture books are excellent to keep a child busy
Doll’s house, Tool bench or Toy kitchen
Large building bricks
Listening to poems: My little one loves poems so I have recorded poems in my phone. I let her listen to it while I am busy.
These are few suggestions and I’m sure you’ll have your own tips and tricks to soothe a child. If you have any suggestion or a story to share, please do share with us in comment section.

Babysitting can be difficult, especially if your child is as stubborn as my niece, LOL. She always dirties the car when she’s eating, or playing with my stuffed toys. As a matter of fact, she even broke my Toy Story Woody action figure.
